REPLICATOR 2 FIRST PRINT ( SORT OF )

Right then !

Here we go.

After multiple failed prints of my little figure I finally got to the bottom of the problem. There was nothing wrong with printer it was the model I had created ! ( quelle surprise )

I had merged all of the sub-tools used to create my figure but the internal geometry was still there so the machine was trying to print three objects in the same place and getting blocked up.

Got some help on what to do from the Zbrush forum and after dyna-meshing had a file that would print !

Whoopee. Ive been waiting ages to see this little fucker in the flesh.

So this is with the supports picked off and with a coat of high build primer.

And this is him straight of the printer with supports picked off.

He's only 80mm tall and when I dyna-meshed I lost a lot of detail but i'm happy to see him for real !

And here he is on the replicator 2. Wasn't actually expecting the print to work so only managed to get this shot of the build about ten minutes from the end when I went to check and see how it was getting on !

Any way as usual I am stupidly busy on a new film so i'm sure I won't be posting every couple of days but i am definitely going to get a couple of bits done before christmas so keep checking in if ya wanna see more and how the clean up goes on  my little chappie. ( oo - er missus ).

Also if anyone one gets to the bottom of this post.......

Come up with a good name for him and i'll send ya one once i've done the resin casts.

Tutty bye for now.

GUESS WHO'S BACK !

Holy crap ! So that was a far longer absence than I was expecting !

So........ I sold the Cubify Cube ! Got back the money I paid for it which is nice.

Had a good half an hour chat with the new owner and passed on any advice I could. Which was mainly that your prints will fail now and again and for no fathomable reason.

The idea was to get a new one straight away but kept deliberating ( and going on holiday's ) and so here we are at the end of 2014. But ! I got a new machine, a second hand replicator 2  for pretty much the same price I got the Cube.

I love second hand shit !

So I have had it a couple of day's now and printed the obligatory nut and bolt which I won't bore you with as I'm sure you have all seen them before.

Been playing around with Zbrush this year as I want to start making collectible toys.

I started out my career as a sculptor making premium collectibles but then moved over to propmaking and then Special Effects in films  but always did enjoy the sculpting side.

I just never had the time to do my own stuff or the space but have been looking at the progress of home printing and thought it would be a good ( mess free ) way of getting back in to it.

Any hoo....

Here he is.

And here he is in red wax just because some people prefer him in that colour !

He was done in Zbrush months ago but I had major problems printing him.
I thought it was the printer playing up and every weekend I would have another little play but no matter what the print would always fail just after the feet.

Finally figured out that the internal geometry was still there inside for the individual components and after some help from the guys on the Zbrush forum got around to printing it.

It went from being a 3 hour print that would always fail to a 1 and a half hour print once it was dynameshed.

Which was nice !

I'll post the print and clean up photo's in the next blog !

3D PRINTED TIE FIGHTER !

Aah man ! Nothing like trying to print and finish pieces off when your doing a full day's work.

So amidst everything going on today manged to get another print started on the Cube.

Chosen the Tie Fighter purely because it prints in to pieces. Lame I know but I just don't have time keep setting the machine up.

Was a six hour plus print and came out pretty well.

I'll start with the print in primer and go backwards. Also was going to go home at 9.15 but ended up staying a bit longer and getting the front section on it's way.

Hopefully that will be sitting there all lovely in the morning. That or the workshop will have burnt down !

Anyhoo here we go...

So they were straight off the plate and in to grey primer.....

And below are printing in action shots. Went for black filament this time bit you cant see any details so may have to go back to Kermit green !

And because I got into it even though I really should have gone home by now I started on the front section....

So let's see how that turns out in the morning !

FINISHED 3D PRINTED CROW SKULL.

So this is the printed crow skull. Just under 60mm.

And that is basically that.

Crow skulls !

Hey up !

So these were printed on a replicator. Not by me, by someone at work. I will try it on the cube but don't hold out much hope.

Stupidly I didn't take a picture of the actual prints before they were cleaned up but this is the two skulls in grey primer. The support structures just picked out easily with a little pick whereas the supports on anything I have printed is really tough to get out but I presume this is because I'm printing at .2 and the birds were done at .1 ?

Anyway here are two resin casts of the above  skulls. They came out really well. A colleage is doing them for a fancy dress costume !

And here are the originals and casts.  I also aged one up which looked pretty cool but again forgot to take a picture. Try to put one up next week

Later's Ya'll !

3D PRINTED PIPBOY 3000

Suhweet !

Finally got around to finishing the Pipboy3000.

Took a bit longer than I thought. I ran out of filament and we have been soooo busy filming at work.

I was on set all last week with lots of late nights so didnt even get a chance to order a new spool.

I downloaded the pipboy screen and was going to take a photo with my phone in it. Then realised as I was setting it up I needed the phone to take the picture !  Doh !

Anyway been back in the workshop this week finally got some filament and cracked on tonight.

Even though that neon green shit was a bit crazy on the eyes you could see what was going on in the print. The black one is very dark to see.

The cube still has a problem with overhangs over 45 degrees and the support setting doesn't actually add anything and I can't find a way to do it manually. Bit rubbish really.

Here are some works in progress from tonight.

The pieces all laid out.

The front main body glued together.

The back main body glued together

Various shots of the whole thing together artworked up.

Anyway there she is. Just needs some l.e.d's . a screen and a gauge and it's totally done.

It's been fun and the Cube is a cracking little machine but once this is done it's going on EBAY.

I start a new film in a month after this one finishes and I need a machine with a better resolution.

And the filament is an absolute rip off although I have found a way around using there stuff.

Going to have to do some research in to which machine to get next but have to say I saw a skull printed on a replicator 2 today and was very very impressed.

Also going to sell the pipboy itself. Seems the sensible thing to do as I can put anything I make on it towards the new printer.

I also did some prints for a boardgame i'm working on but can't publish as it's top secret so I'll have to find another little printing project. ( havent had time to draw my figures up yet ! )

Any idea's welcome !

That's me. Bye.

God Damn It Leeroy !

Wan gwan ?

So had me a little longer exodus there than I was expecting.

The weekend was always going to be a write off as I was planning to do a lickle bit of boozing.

I did. It worked.

Cut to monday morning and hanging in rags only to end up prepping  on set for a big shot on tues.

1030 pm finish on mon and midnight finish on Tues.

Got in and managed to get to sleep about 130am only to be awoken by a yapping little bastard dog down the road.

All in after a boozy weekend and a hard grafting two days at work I think I got 2 hours sleep.

What's this got to do with 3D printing ?

Fuck all.

I just want some sympathy "bitches" !

Sorry about that last comment, been watching breaking bad.

Anyway back to the Pipboy 3000

This is with the components that I printed last week added and roughly cleaned up.

Have to say last week's prints were pretty shit. In the Cube you have the option to add supports and rafts so I tried it and every piece came out worse for some reason.

I managed to save them  but they were a bit poop.  I say a bit poop its still amazing that a glue gun on steroids has made this in a few hours ! it's just that I know it can be better.

That's the reason I'm looking in to this technology to see where it can fit in to my workflow in prop making.

Anyway these are the extra pieces with some basic ageing. You might notice it doesnt look as finnished as some of the bits did a few posts ago. That's because there is still a lot of weathering to do and i'm doing different pieces at different times.

I know. I'm impatient. So what ;-)

Oh yeah the Cube told me it didnt have enough filament to finish the last print I tried but I thought i'd give it a go ( told you I was impatient ! )  and not only did it finish the print it still has some in the spool although I have no idea how much as you cant see inside.

It has a chip in it ( that obviously isnt up to much ) and seems to be geared towards making you use there own filament  which cost's up to 10 times the amount of other filaments out there. Just the same as the old school 2d printer manufacturers i suppose.

Right I need to eat so here are some more shot's from today. Oh and I just put in GTA V. That's ok though isn't it ?

It's not like it's going to take over my life !

Night Night ! xxx
